This tutorial demonstrates how to connect the PS4 DualShock 4 controller to FPVSIM using a data cable, and completes the detection, mode selection, joystick range and direction calibration of the desktop and web versions respectively. The purpose of calibration is to allow FPVSIM to accurately understand the center, endpoints and directions of the four axes of throttle, roll, pitch, and yaw.
Prepare the controller and data connection
You need a PS4 DualShock 4 controller, a Micro-USB cable that supports data transfer, and either the FPVSIM desktop version or a modern browser that can run the web version. A charge-only cable may light up the controller without making it available to the computer as an input device. If FPVSIM shows no stick movement, first try a confirmed data cable or another USB port.
This video uses a wired USB connection and does not cover Bluetooth pairing. After connecting, the controller should show a blue light and the system should report a connected device before you proceed with detection and calibration.
Calibrate in the FPVSIM desktop version
Start FPVSIM, open Options, and choose Calibrate Gamepad. First move both sticks through their full travel in every direction so the software can record each axis minimum, maximum, and center. Then operate throttle, roll, pitch, and yaw in sequence, following the on-screen prompts exactly. Do not guess directions from the radio mode you usually use; follow the axis names and arrows in the current calibration interface.
Afterward, return to the simulator for a short, gentle test flight. If an axis is reversed, fails to return to center, or cannot reach full scale, recalibrate and check again that the data connection and live input display are stable.
Pair and calibrate in the FPVSIM browser version
Open the browser simulator, go to Settings → Controller, and move the sticks to confirm that the browser detects the device. For the DualShock 4 shown in the video, choose Compatibility mode. The tutorial explicitly states that this controller does not support High-speed mode.
Click Start calibration. As in the desktop version, first move both sticks through their entire range, then follow the diagrams for roll, pitch, yaw, and throttle directions in sequence. Test-fly with slow movements afterward. If live input stops responding, reconnect the data cable and repeat the browser pairing process.
Using the controller after calibration
Short gamepad sticks have a different travel from full-size RC radio sticks. Start with smaller movements and learn the feel through steady hovering and slow turns. Calibration corrects input ranges and directions; it does not replace control practice.
Check live input before taking off: all four axes should change continuously and smoothly and return to their expected centers when released. Recheck whenever you change the connection method or browser, or encounter abnormal axis behavior, rather than flying with incorrect inputs.
Operation steps
- Connect the DualShock 4
Connect the controller to the computer with a Micro-USB data cable and confirm that the system recognizes it as an input device.
- Open the desktop calibration tool
In the FPVSIM desktop version, open Options and choose Calibrate Gamepad.
- Record the full range and follow the axis prompts
Move both sticks through their entire travel, then operate throttle, roll, pitch, and yaw as instructed on screen.
- Verify the desktop setup with a short test flight
Return to the simulator and use gentle movements to confirm each axis direction, center, and endpoints.
- Choose Compatibility mode in the browser version
Go to Settings → Controller. Once the gamepad is detected, select Compatibility mode for the DualShock 4 shown in the video.
- Complete browser calibration and test-fly
Start calibration, complete the range and four-axis direction prompts, then make a gentle test flight to verify the inputs.
FAQ
The controller lights up, so why does FPVSIM still receive no input?
The most common cause is a cable that supplies power but cannot transfer data. Use a Micro-USB cable confirmed to support data, reconnect the controller, and try another USB port.
Should I choose High-speed mode or Compatibility mode in the browser version?
Choose Compatibility mode for the DualShock 4 in the video. The tutorial explicitly states that this controller does not support High-speed mode. For other devices, follow the support information in the current interface.
Do the desktop and browser versions need separate calibration?
Yes. The tutorial calibrates each environment separately because both need to learn the controller center positions, endpoints, and axis directions independently.
Does this tutorial cover Bluetooth connections?
No. The video demonstrates a wired USB connection using a Micro-USB data cable.
What should I do if an axis is reversed or cannot reach its full range?
Run calibration again. First move both sticks through their entire travel, then follow the axis names and arrows exactly. Afterward, verify the result with the live input display and a short test flight.

Okay, let's take a look at how to calibrate a PS4 controller with FPVSIM simulators, both
desktop version and web version. This is a PS4 DualShock 4. First, you can connect it with
a micro USB cable. This is probably a pretty old model, still uses micro USB, so find a
micro USB cable connect it once this shows blue right and your computer make
the sound that means it's connected once it's connected to go to options
category gamepad and just follow the instructions first move every sticks I
use these two sticks to play it I use this one as throttle I use this one as
roll this one as pitch this one as yaw basically this is like the mode one in
the RC community this is how mode one works the left stick is you know throttle
yaw right stick is pitch and roll and as simple as that we're calibrated now we
can fly the drone with this controller awesome that's how you calibrate okay now
Now let's take a look at how to configure this controller with FPVSIM web version.
Now we are already at FPVSIM web simulator.
Go to settings, controller, you can see that it says please plug in your radio, move the
gimbal, right, let's move it.
Here please select compatibility mode, as high speed mode is not supported by this
controller. Once it's selected click start calibration and move these two
sticks as we did for the desktop version and just move as indicated
by the little graph on the left. Now move your roll, move pitch, move yaw, move throttle
and we're done. Now we can fly the simulator with the PS4 controller.
Apparently not very good as this controller but you can definitely you
get pretty good if you fly out long enough with it. Awesome! That's how you
configure a PS4 controller with a FPVSIM desktop version and a web version.
